Fallout Boy Pete Wentz plays a glowing-green-eyed zombie in the video for the Ready Set song “Love Like Woe.” Warning: song is obnoxious and the zombies are pretty meh. Still, the video is embedded below and Spin has the story and some behind-the-scenes pics. (Spin)

List: Top 10 zombie tots

Posted by Cory Casciato On March - 31 - 2010

There is nothing creepier than a zombie kid. Humans are wired to feel protective toward the little ones, and when you subvert that by making the little bastards into flesh-hungry freaks, it’s just extra unsettling. Similarly, twist it a little more and it becomes funny, maybe even a little cute again — but still fucking creepy. Considering the prevalence of undead tykes in the zombie film mythos, it’s obviously a favorite trope of filmmakers everywhere. It’s also a favorite of mine, perhaps paradoxically since I am a parent, or maybe that’s why I love them so much. Here are ten of my favorite zombie tots from the movies. May you never wake up and have one of them looming over your bed.

Good news for those of us (myself included) looking forward to the TV adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead series! Word is that AMC has ordered six episodes of the forthcoming series, sight unseen! Also, the current frontrunner for the role of Rick Grimes is said to be Hackers star Johnny Lee Miller. (Bloody Disgusting)

In more Walking Dead news, KNB Effects Group will be handling the zombie effects and makeup for the series. (Shock Till You Drop)

In other made-for-TV zombie news, there’s an anime series called High School of the Dead coming in 2010. High-school students vs. zombie, with lots of panty-shots and attention to boobs. Could be fun. Shaky-cam trailer embedded below. (Anime Vice)

New Left 4 Dead 2 DLC  news update! It will not be available this month. The new date is “Spring” but the cost was announced: 560 MS points (or $7 in US currency). In addition to the sweet scenario featuring the surviving original L4D characters, you will also get a golf club melee weapon, a heavy-duty machine gun (not reloadable, kind of like the grenade launcher) and a bride variant of the Witch. Plus the previously announced stuff (new common-uncommon, new modes/modes, etc.). A little pricey, but not to bad. (Kotaku)

The Pride and Prejudice and Zombies madness simply will not stop. Now there’s going to be a videogame version, for the iPhone/iPod touch. It appears to be a side-scrolling brawler. (Kotaku)

I’ve mentioned the post-apocalyptic Western zombie movie Devil’s Crossing once or twice. Well, there’s a teaser trailer (embedded below) and a bit more available. (28 Days Later: An Analysis)

Fashion Zombie: Zombie Johnny Cash

Posted by Cory Casciato On March - 29 - 2010

This week’s Fashion Zombie entry comes from my personal collection (hence the questionable quality of the photography, the wrinkles and the minor wear visible). It’s a band shirt for the Littleton, Colorado-based Zombie Hate Brigade, a super-heavy grindcore/death metal band. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of the genre, but they are very cool dudes and love zombies as much as I do. Plus, they make some kick-ass shirts.

This one is one of my favorites, and the band was kind enough to donate it to my personal collection a while back. As you can see, the front simply states “Zombie” across the chest, which is actually kind of cool. The back, though is much cooler – a zombified Johnny Cash in an iconic pose. It appears the shirt is no longer available from the band’s sales site, but maybe if you contact them via MySpace (click the band name above for a link) they can hook you up. Oh, and they do have a limited number of hoodies with a similar Johnny Cash image available. Enough talk — the second image awaits below…

I’m attempting to assemble an all zombie-themed wardrobe. Fashion Zombie is my weekly post detailing the coolest zombie-themed clothes and accessories I can find. Check back every Monday for another look at the hottest zombie apparel.

Review: Wet Work

Posted by Cory Casciato On March - 26 - 2010

Philip Nutman was writing zombie apocalypse novels before zombie apocalypse novels were cool. These days, it seems like we get a new one once a week or so, but back in 1993 when he published Wet Work, they were pretty scarce on the ground. The book is held up as an exemplar of the “splatterpunk” movement, meaning it’s gore-drenched and relatively depraved. If you like your zombie fiction that way, then by all means, dive right in.

When comet Saracen unexpectedly shows up in a remarkably close orbit, it’s bad news for life as we know it. Some unknown radiation from the comet has a couple of nasty effects — effects no one notices until it’s too late. First, it raises the dead. Second, it thoroughly fucks the immune system of nearly everyone it touches, turning even common infections into deadly killers. That’s a nearly unbeatable combo and in no time at all, it’s hell on Earth in the form of a full-blown zombie apocalypse.

List: Old-school zombies

Posted by Cory Casciato On March - 24 - 2010

These days, the Romero-inspired vision of flesh-eating zombies is so ingrained as the de facto blueprint for the living dead that it’s hard to remember that anything of substance came before. Yet before he came along and changed the game forever with the now-classic 1968 feature Night of the Living Dead, zombies already had a rich, 35+ year history at the movies. Admittedly, most of those films were, to put it mildly, forgettable. There are a few worthwhile films to be found in the first three and half decades of zombiedom, though. Here’s a guide to five of them that are worth the time to track down, in order from least worthwhile to most.
