Review: We’re Alive

Posted by Cory Casciato On April - 30 - 2010

Season one of the audio drama We’re Alive is done, making it the perfect time to review it as a whole. As one of the few episodic audio dramas around and perhaps the only ongoing such series that tells the tale of a zombie apocalypse, We’re Alive is well-positioned to make waves in the zombie world.

The story follows a relatively familiar zombie apocalypse plot arc. We start with a small group of soldiers, called to report to duty to deal with some sudden and extreme “rioting.” The rioters turn out to be flesh-eating freaks that turn their victims into more of the same. The soldiers flee, find other survivors and hole up in an abandoned apartment building.

As in so many stories of the type, the narrative follows the group as they fortify their tower, look for supplies and survivors, encounter other groups of survivors and face the zombies. The basic story elements are familiar. What sets We’re Alive apart is the twists. This is not a Dawn of the Dead clone set in a tower instead of a mall. It has its own unique personality, based in its original take on the zombies themselves, its distinctive cast of characters and its unusual format.

Great moments in zombie history

Posted by Cory Casciato On April - 28 - 2010

There have been many milestones throughout the eighty-year history of the zombie in Western culture. In today’s world, where zombies are such a part of everyday life that every college campus is aswarm with games of Human vs. Zombie, zombies are used in advertising and we get a new zombie movie or game released every few months, it’s easy to forget our roots. To make sure that doesn’t happen, I’ve compiled a quick overview of ten great moments in zombie history, from the earliest days to modern times. Without these milestones, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Remember and rejoice.

Some clever computer folk dug into the guts of the new Left 4 Dead 2 DLC “The Passing” to get this list of upcoming Mutation game types. Are they all real? Only time will tell. (Destructoid)

The classic “guy brings tragically killed girlfriend back from dead only to learn there are consequences” plot is the fuel for the movie Kiss the Abyss. Guys, you need to learn: never bring your girl back from the dead, it won’t end well. The trailer is embedded after the break and it looks great. (Quiet Earth)

There’s a new clip from George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead embedded below. Remember, it’s coming to VOD April 30 and theaters May 28. (Fangoria)

Fashion Zombie: Narwhal vs. zombie

Posted by Cory Casciato On April - 26 - 2010

Zombies. They love to fight stuff. And Etsy designer Tina Seamonster loves to make shirts documenting that. You may recall she was the one behind the awesome “Obama punching a zombie” shirt that was the first-ever Fashion Zombie entry. Now she’s combined two of the Internet’s favorite things — narwhals and zombies — into one awesome shirt-based deathmatch, illustrated by Chuck Knigge. As the woman herself says, “I am pretty sure that the elusive narwhal can totally take a zombie. Given the right conditions, like in the water, of course.” Can’t argue with that.

You can get one of these shirts, in green (pictured) or pink, for $20 from her shop. She makes them in small batches, so they may sell out and/or not be available in your size. Just keep checking back, she makes more from time to time. To see the design on a model, click through the “Read the rest of this entry” link below.

I’m attempting to assemble an all zombie-themed wardrobe. Fashion Zombie is my weekly post detailing the coolest zombie-themed clothes and accessories I can find. Check back every Monday for another look at the hottest zombie apparel.
