In case you somehow didn’t hear, Dennis Hopper died May 29. He was awesome in Land of the Dead (and many other fine, non-zombie films, too!). RIP Mr. Hopper. (Dread Central)

Another George Romero interview comes to be. Not much new, but well done at least. (DCist)

In the Resident Evil: Afterlife coverage parade, actor Kim Coates gets interviewed about his character, his stunts and other such things. (FEARnet)

The horror comedy Aaah! Zombies! tells the story of a group of friends turned to zombies by a chemical agent. It looks promising, it’s coming September 28 and you can see an embedded trailer below. (28 Days Later Analysis)

Atlanta is the place to be this summer if you want to be a zombie. Friday I noted that The Walking Dead was seeking zombies there in June and July, now comes word that indie zombie comedy Ace the Zombie is looking for zombies in Atlanta this summer, too. (Buy Zombie)

An interesting critical essay explores the ongoing cinematic zombie apocalypse zeitgeist. (Popdose)

The eternal question “Unicorns or zombies?” will get an answer in book form, coming September 21, 2010. I think you know which side of the fence I am on… (Zombie Command)

Enjoy some photos of the recent Boston Zombie March VI. (Amplified Reality Photography)

The rhythm/zombie game Rock of the Dead is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3. (Zombie Command)

Fashion Zombie: iZombie

Posted by Cory Casciato On May - 31 - 2010

Ever feel like a friend or a loved one is a mindless slave to Apple, joining their undead army for a march on open computing standards and a free, boundaryless Internet? Or maybe that’s you? Well, here’s your shirt! Anti-Apple sentiment aside, it’s also a decent riff on a ubiquitous advertising campaign and it has a zombie carrying his own head, something we can all appreciate.

If you want it, you’ll have to act fast: it is one of Teefury‘s shirts-of-the-day and today is that day. Your options are few: Colorwise, ladies get the red one, gents get the green. At time of posting you have just about seven and a half hours to pull the trigger. It’s only $9 and I have been very happy with all my Teefury shirts quality-wise, if that helps at all.  Me, I’m kind of on the fence, myself. I don’t love the color and while the design is cool, it doesn’t blow me away. What do you all think? Should I buy one?

I’m attempting to assemble an all zombie-themed wardrobe. Fashion Zombie is my weekly post detailing the coolest zombie-themed clothes and accessories I can find. Check back every Monday for another look at the hottest zombie apparel.

The George Romero Media Deathmarch continues. Here’s a list of what’s new today:

  • Cinematical does a good interview, covering Westerns, Romero’s other films and lots of stuff that isn’t covered elsewhere.
  • Brightest Young Things does a decent interview with a few new questions.
  • Vanity Fair does a crappy interview. I think the interviewer was drunk and pissed he had to interview Romero.
  • Finally, you will find a video interview for Sci Fi Wire embedded below. It’s okay, but no new ground.

Want to be a zombie in AMC’s adaptation of The Walking Dead? Take a vacation to Atlanta in mid-June or early July and your dream could come true. (On Location Vacations)

There’s a new redband trailer for the US theatrical release of REC 2. It reveals some new stuff (possibly a bit too much, as most US trailers tend to) and it makes me even more excited for the movie. See it embedded below. (Bloody Disgusting)

An interview with actor Shawn Roberts, who plays villain Albert Wesker in the upcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife, covers the film’s zombies, shooting in 3D and lots more. (FEARnet)

Zombies, vampires, seances, magical doohickeys and Tom Savini are just some of the goodies in the trailer for The Dead Matter embedded below. There’s more info on its release, too. (Dread Central)

Another day, another George Romero interview. This one may be my favorite, as he reveals what he thinks of 3D, the afterlife and what his zombie apocalypse kit consists of, among many other gems. (Philadelphia Magazine)

If you’re looking to hang that Charlie Adlard (Walking Dead artist) Survival of the Dead poster in your home, your dreams have come true and it will only cost you $30. Also, your dreams will glow in the dark, so there’s that. (Ain’t It Cool News)

Robert Kirkman reveals some good stuff about the AMC adaptation of his Walking Dead series, stuff like there’s no gore limit imposed by the network, Jeffrey DeMunn is playing Dale and the show won’t completely follow the plot of the books. (Ain’t It Cool News)

The next videogame from Gearbox Software, developers of the Borderlands videogame (which had a zombie-based expansion), may be a zombie game. They just registered a trademark for videogames and movies called Z-Day, and that sure as heck sounds like a zombie game to me! (1Up)

If you want the special, three-disc (two CDs of music, one DVD of film) version of the upcoming movie The Dead Matter, you will have to venture into a Hot Topic, where it will be exclusively sold. The horror, the horror… Presumably, the regular one-disc edition will be available at other, non-emo retailers. Anyway, the film is about a girl who comes into possession of a relic that allows her to control the dead, which makes her the target of a vampire lord. Sounds suitably ridiculous and it has Tom Savini. (Fangoria)

Probably no surprise to anyone, REC 2 pulled an R rating for American theaters. (Bloody Disgusting)

Another George Romero interview walks among us. Covers a lot of now-familiar ground, but it’s worth a quick look. (Ain’t It Cool News)

And another Romero video interview, too, from Cinema Cool Show. It’s embedded below. (Cinema Cool Show)

The collaborative remix project Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated is coming to DVD July 27 with over two hours of bonus features. It will retail for $17. (Fangoria)

Seems that FEARnet is determined to interview everyone involved with Resident Evil: Afterlife but the caterer. Today, they talk to editor Niven Howie. (FEARnet)

Just a couple days until REC 2 gets a theatrical release in the UK. Celebrate with a tool to REC-zombify yourself! (Dread Central)

So, Android phones have something called “Live Wallpaper” and there’s a zombie apocalypse-simulating “live wallpaper” from Pixel Zombies. I don’t really know what any of that means, but I am inclined to think it’s a good thing. So, yay! (Phandroid)

I bet you always wanted to see the survivors and zombies of Left 4 Dead in super-cute “chibi” versions, didn’t you? (Kotaku)

ZMMM 3.0 Update

Posted by Cory Casciato On May - 26 - 2010

It’s hard to believe, but the third annual Zombie Movie Marathon Month starts in less than a week. Easier to believe is that the planning is coming down to the last possible minute. That’s just how I roll, there’s no avoiding it. That being the case, there’s still plenty of time for you all to weigh in with some suggestions. Below the break, I’ll explain what this years themes are, give you the preliminary list of movies I’m considering and solicit your input on the which should stay, which should go and what I should add. If you are currently asking yourself ‘Zombie movie mara-what now?” then read the ZMMM 3.0 Intro post, which includes complete lists of what was watched in years one and two.

Magnolia is prepping a deluxe Survival of the Dead: Ultimate Undead Edition Blu-ray for release August 24. How deluxe? No clue, the specs and extras have yet to be announced. (Bloody Disgusting)

How about some George Romero interviews? I’ve got two of them (one’s a two-parter), all embedded below!

  • First, he talks about Survival of the Dead with a dude named “Spider.” (FEARnet)
  • Then they sit him in front of Left 4 Dead 2 to talk about it, the zombie genre’s evolution and more. Part one is at FEARnet, part two at G4′s The Feed. And it’s a more than a half hour total (don’t forget, it’s all embedded below).

Did you like the makeup and creature effects in Quarantine (review here)? Good news, the same dude is handling those duties for the sequel. That sequel is written and directed by John Pogue and is set in an airport. It starts shooting next month. (Dread Central)

Humans vs. zombies makes it to the campus of Ohio State University. (The Lantern)

The sorta-kinda French zombie movie The Pack (they’re “ghouls” who are already dead and still hungry — close enough, right?) dropped some new pictures. (Filmstarts.de)

Fashion Zombie: The Horde!

Posted by Cory Casciato On May - 25 - 2010

This week’s shirt is my current personal favorite. It’s called The Horde and it illustrates a classic and tragic situation in zombie lore. One man, alone against the undead masses with just a shotgun and chainsaw. It will end badly for him, but damn it, he isn’t going down without a fight. The shirt works really well because it’s subtle — you can look right at it and not quite realize what you’re looking at it until a few minutes later BAM! Your brain puts it all together and you say, “Wow, awesome!” This actually happened to me the other day, while wearing the shirt and talking to a friend: he literally stopped and complimented the shirt once he realized what he was looking at.

You can own it yourself by paying Threadless $18. As I mentioned, I personally own this one and can vouch for its comfort, durability and stylishness. Fits a little tighter around the neck than most of my shirts, but not in an uncomfortable way. If that price is a little steep for you, Threadless regularly runs $9 specials, too. And if you’d like to see it in action, click through the “Read More” link to see it on Threadless user Zombilina, who is herself wielding a chainsaw.

I’m attempting to assemble an all zombie-themed wardrobe. Fashion Zombie is my weekly post detailing the coolest zombie-themed clothes and accessories I can find. Check back every Monday for another look at the hottest zombie apparel.

The mainstream will not let the Survival of the Dead-induced George Romero interview mania pass without getting in on the action! The Master talks to the Boston Globe about why zombie movies will never die and what his movies are really about. (Boston.com)

Sneak a peek of Resident Evil: Afterlife with three new images from the film. (UGO)

Zombies invade Battle Creek, Michigan (isn’t that where all the cereal gets made?) and a local blog captures the mayhem. (The Village Thinker)

Looking forward to “zombies in Africa” epic The Dead? Then this report should be quite interesting. (Zombie Command)

A new horror anthology series called Habeus Corpus is on the way, and one of the episodes is about civil service zombies. Color me intrigued. (Dread Central)

Baltimore, Maryland will get its sci-fi con May 28-31 at BaltiCon, where you can enjoy a panel discussion on the all-important zombie apocalypse preparation kit. (The Command Line)

A report from PollyGrind, a Las Vegas-based film festival, calls Zombie Apocalypse Now: A Zombie Hunter “one of the most trying movie-watching experiences … ever endured.” Sounds promising! You can read a bit more about it here. (Las Vegas Sun)

How about some delicious “zombie meat”? Okay, it’s really beef jerky — blue beef jerky, mind you — marketed as zombie meat in Japan. Yummy. (Pink Tentacle)

Coming this week to Blu-ray: Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (and a lot of other stuff without any zombies in it). (Dread Central)
