It’s got lots of bad makeup, a really cheesy B&W/silver filter and a David Lynch wannabe vibe, plus lots of self-congratulatory accolades and warnings and the longest/stupidest studio credits sequence of all time. Look! A zombie!

There’s not a lot of reason to seek out the forgettable and forgotten zombie-alien invasion movie Invisible Invaders. Maybe if you were on a quest to see every movie John Carradine ever made? Or a quest like my own, to see every zombie movie ever made? Both would suffice, but in either case, put it near the end of your list — it sucks.

Its primary sin is it’s boring. A story about unstoppable aliens who can reanimate the dead should not be this dull. But if you tell that story largely via voiceover and stock footage, I guess it isn’t too surprising. The majority of the rest of the “action” takes place in a bunker, where four people argue, fight and “do science.” The result of their “science” is a goofy looking sonic raygun prop that can stop the aliens, thus saving the Earth. Also, two of them fall in love and the asshole guy dies.

Zombies? Yeah, there are zombies. They’re pretty incidental, though. The aliens occupy dead people in order to … uh … occupy dead people? Once they strangle a guy and they seem to cause some trouble elsewhere, but mostly they just stagger around looking vaguely creepy. I guess cinematic scares were hard to come by in the ’50s and maybe this was enough? Anyway, these are among the least interesting zombies ever. Even Plan 9 from Outer Space has them beat.

To reiterate: don’t watch this, it really isn’t worth your time.

Next February 5, the plan is for Zombie Apocalypse: Redemption (sequel to Zombie Apocalypse, reviewed here) to get its Michigan (and possibly world?) premiere at the Ionia Horror Film Fest in Ionia, Michigan (that links to the home page, where the article currently is, but there’s no permalink, so it may not be up for long). Chicago gets a zombie fest to benefit wounded soldiers this September 25. Bands, makeup contest and more! (Buy Zombie)

In a dangerous yet fairly awesome publicity stunt, the mad scientists over at Harcos Labs (maker of Zombie Blood energy potion) filled an intersection with folks in zombie makeup, then deliberately ran a red light to get a one-of-a-kind photo from the red-light camera.

If killing zombies with your guitar controller in Rock of the Dead isn’t abstract enough, how about using your drum controller to kill zombies in the upcoming Drumskulls? There’s some video of the game being demoed embedded below for you. (Kotaku)

I enjoy boardgames. They’re cheap, they’re fun and they’re a lot more interactive a way to spend time with friends and family that watching a movie (yes, even a zombie movie). That’s why I’m pleased to bring you Dead of Night, a free, downloadable zombie board game, as this week’s Undead Diversion.

Designed by Simon Spearing, Dead of Night is a game for up to six people (four is the recommended number) that more or less turns Night of the Living Dead into a game. As mentioned, it is free, but it will probably cost you a few dollars worth of printing supplies to print out the rules, tokens and other necessities (or it will cost your employer a few dollars worth of printing supplies…). It seems Hollywood big-name director Barry Levinson is working on a “zombie eco-thriller” called The Bay about a massive viral outbreak engulfing the East Coast that will be depicted as if from video from camera phones, security footage, etc. Uh, you mean like Diary of the Dead meets Cloverfield? Kind of hard to believe, but the site’s been around for just a touch more than eighteen months now. In that time, I’ve amassed more than 600 posts and almost a thousand comments on said posts (thanks for the feedback!), all of which means, if you’re new, or don’t visit the site on a regular basis, you might have missed some cool stuff.
