Word from Night of the Creeps director Fred Dekker is that if the upcoming DVD release sells well, a sequel could be in the works. Also, Blu-ray should be forthcoming too. (Bloody Disgusting)

Get ready for musical zombie mayhem in Graveyard Shift, a dancing, singing undead opus coming to the NYC Fringe Festival. (Fangoria)

More Left 4 Dead 2 info emerges, this time revealing bulletproof zombies — former cops in riot gear. You have to melee the shit out of them to kill them, bullets get absorbed by their kevlar armor. Scary. There’s also another take on the same level reported on a few days ago. Oh, and there’s a few new screens, too and a clip embedded after the break. Wow, Comic Con is like a firehose of zombie video game news, isn’t it? (Kotaku)

South Korea gets into the zombie apocalypse business with The Neighbor Zombie, an anthology of four zombie shorts by four different directors. (Quiet Earth)

Paul W.S. Anderson is returning as director for the next Resident Evil movie. (Production Weekly)

Speaking of Resident Evil, the game part of the franchise could be up for a change in direction and developers … or maybe not. (Kotaku)

Additional details emerge about I Spit on Your Rave, a post-apocalyptic tale of a world where zombies rule and humans are only food — or sometimes entertainment. And you can still get in on that world-record “zombies on camera” attempt, too. Read about it here.

It looks as if the film adaptation of World War Z is headed for one of the early circles of development hell, as in addition to the recently announced delay while director Marc Foster does something else, it’s also got a new screenwriter. Hope for the best. (Fangoria)

In the meantime, maybe you will enjoy the upcoming short film The Hell Patrol, said to be heavily influenced by World War Z. Quiet Earth has details, trailer is embedded after the break. (Quiet Earth)

Director Bruce LaBruce (Otto; or Up with Dead People) isn’t done with zombies and porn — he’s working on a new, hardcore gay zombie porn and there are some images and details available. Do NOT click that link at work (unless you work at a bathhouse or something…) and/or if you aren’t comfortable with male nudity and lots of blood. (Ponystep)

If you’re a fan of Re-Animator (and really, who isn’t?) you should have a look at the cool new poster Alex Pardee did over at Mondo. They’re available for $30 if you want to own one… (AICN)

Speaking of posters, this Deadgirl poster is pretty damn cool. (Horror-Movies.ca)

PC gamers need not feel left out of the Resident Evil 5 fun much longer — they get the game September 15. oh, and iPhone users won’t have to feel left out of the Resident Evil 4 fun much longer either.  (Kotaku)

Oh good, the Army is figuring out a way to combine zombies and robots (actually, corpse-eating robots, but close enough). This can’t end badly… (io9)

Zombie cinema goes retro in Doctor “S” Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies, a black-and-white, ’50s style movie with a modern edge about a doctor fighting off zombies created through government attempts to create the ultimate solider. It’s screening at the Brainwash Festival in Oakdale, Ca. on July 18. (Undead Backbrain via Quiet Earth)

If you’re all stoked for one of the midnight screenings of hot zombie-girl flick Deadgirl July 24-25, get more excited because the list of guests at those showings (including the directors, writer and stars) is here. (Fangoria)

DC brings back a bunch of dead superheroes as undead superheroes in Blackest Night, which apparently is just starting. You can get a handy primer on what it’s all about here. (io9)

How about a sneak peek at the Zombieland teaser poster? (Horror-Movies.ca)

Gaze upon the awesomeness of this promo shirt for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles that’s being given out at San Diego Comic Con and know that I will owe the world’s biggest favor to anyone that can get me one. (Coathangr)

The San Francisco Bay Guardian weighs in with their inevitable zombie zeitgeist piece. (San Francisco Bay Guardian)

Dates were announced for DVD releases of Pontypool (in Blockbuster October 13, retail February 10, 2010) and Dead Snow (Blockbuster October 20, retail January 26, 2010). They also said something about Resident Evil: Afterlife coming to theaters September 17, 2010. That seems like a very long time to wait for Pontypool… (Fangoria)

If spoilers are your thing, io9 has some details on Zombieland. And some more. (io9)

On a slow news days, something as insignificant as a single still from The Horde, the upcoming cops/gangsters/zombies film from France, might qualify as news. Like today. (Bloody Disgusting)

Be on the lookout for the upcoming novel Feed, about a zombie outbreak as documented by the online community when the mainstream media ignores it. The author Seanan McGuire says, “It’s an unholy cross between Transmetropolitan and Night of the Living Dead, with a little Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on the side.” Sounds good to me. More details here. (Media Bistro)

If you’re excited to see the micro-budget English zombie flick Colin, you’ll probably also be excited to hear that Fangoria is doing a live webcast with writer/dirctor Marc Price next Tuesday afternoon, July 7, at 4 p.m. EST. (Fangoria)

First I’ve heard of the book, but here’s an interview with author E. Van Lowe about Never Slow Dance with a Zombie (damn good advice, by the way!). (Popin’s Lair)

Gangster and zombies go together like fish and chips, so The Horde should be tasty. Cops go after gangsters for revenge, but get zombies instead. Awesome. Trailer after the break. (Quiet Earth)

More details continue to trickle out about Wii zombie killers Dead Space Extraction (control scheme details) and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles (character details). Now they need to come out, already. (Kotaku)

The biggest news of the day, by far, is that Michael Jackson is dead. How is that zombie news? Ever heard of a little thing called “Thriller”? It’s probably behind only Night of the Living Dead and maybe Dawn of the Dead in terms of popularizing zombies. TMZ broke the news earlier today, but it’s pretty much everywhere. (TMZ)

PC gamers get official support for custom campaigns in Left 4 Dead with an update today. Lucky bastards. (Kotaku)

And that’s it, because today is the slowest zombie news days ever. But to salve the pain, there’s a silly Resident Evil claymation clip embedded after the breka (thanks to Kotaku for the find).

ZMMM Dailies: 6/12/2009 – Resident Evil

Posted by Cory Casciato On June - 13 - 2009

resident-evilIn all honesty, I liked Resident Evil a lot more than I thought I would — and a lot more than I did the first time. I guess when I saw it the first time back in 2003, I had only seen maybe a dozen zombie movies, and mostly the cream of the crop. Since then, I became a zombie obsessive and watched another hundred or so, covering everything from genuinely fine cinema to punishing trials of endurance. Seen in the proper context, Resident Evil is really not that bad of a zombie movie. Yes, it is dumb. Yes, it is as subtle as a hammer to the face. The direction uses way too many pointless slow-motion shots, exaggerated action bullshit and cheesy effects sequences such as the laser grid. But it is a video game movie, after all –  turn your brain down to “simmer,” and this is a pretty damn fun movie. And it’s got Milla Jovovich looking hot and kicking ass. It doesn’t follow the plot of the games, but considering the convoluted melodrama and half-baked insanity of the games, is that really such a bad thing?

Next up is Plan 9 from Outer Space, sometimes called the worst movie ever made. We’ll see — I’ve seen some prettty god damn terrible movies in my time.

Been a while since any news came out on Zombieland (the Woody Harrelson zom-com) but Ain’t It Cool News has some hi-res pics for you (and supposedly an interview with director Ruben Fleischer coming this weekend). They look good. Not great, but good. (AICN)

Your iPhone will let you shoot demons and zombies when Doom Resurrection — an on-rails version of the popular shooter franchise — is released later this month. IGN has a preview. (IGN)

The Wii rail-shooter entry in the Resident Evil franchise — Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles — is coming along nicely, says this preview. (Kotaku)

Check your knowledge of zombie film with this quiz from AMC-TV (I got 100 percent, but had to guess at one answer). (AMC-TV)

There’s a new trailer for REC 2, the sequel to Spanish first-person zombie thriller REC, and wow is it awesome. I could describe all the action for you, but then you’d just watch it anyway and go, “Yes. That is what he described.” It’s embedded after the break, so go watch it. (Bloody Disgusting)

The fine folks at Kotaku got their hands on a preview of Left 4 Dead 2 and have detailed impressions, including that there will be three new “boss infected,” the regular infected will be harder to kill and tidbits about the new weapons (you hold melee or ranged, not both) and setting (daytime). And more, so go check it out. Also on tap from the Kotaku kids is a look at two characters that didn’t make it into the game, which includes a tiny bit about the ones who did. (Kotaku)

PSP owners will be glad to know they are getting a Resident Evil game of their own and … well, that’s all for now. Word is it probably isn’t a port, but something new. Unless it isn’t. (Kotaku)

After the break, your REC 2 trailer awaits, along with a trailer for Resident Evil: Darkside ChroniclesRead the rest of this entry »

It’s nearly a month old, the sound and music are sketchy and it looks pretty rough, but maybe, just maybe the teaser trailer for the new George A. Romero zombie film embedded after the break is real. The comments indicate it’s some kind of internal work-in-progress reel, and I think I recognize one of the actors from another Romero film (he’s known to like to re-use actors) so maybe this is real… It’s worth a look anyway, and you can do that after the break. (Thanks CG user demoniotto for the tip)

If you like your zombie movies extra-stupid and possibly offensive, you’re going to be thrilled to hear that Retardead comes out on DVD today. I’m pretty sure that title tells you all you need to know about this one. (Dread Central)

Yesterday, I posted my wish list for Left 4 Dead 2, then I saw this early preview of the game. Shit, looks like I am getting most of my wishes (incendiary ammo? sweet!) … but not all (although the new Charger boss looks plausible given the existing menagerie, and I can accept a Witch that walks around). And there’s some stuff I didn’t dream up that we’ll be getting, too, like dynamic weather. (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)

Fangoria has some screens and details from Dead Rising 2 and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. (Fangoria)

Zombie toy collectors will be thrilled with this upcoming limited-edition zombie figurine from FearWerx. They’ll be available first at the MonsterMania Convention in Hartford, Connecticut. (Dread Central)

Finally, the second annual Zombie Movie Marathon Month kicked off in fine fashion with Dead Set last night (review here). Starting tomorrow, I will be posting ZMMM Dailies, with the Zombie Movie Marathon Month tag, for easy tracking. Don’t forget that possibly authentic Romero trailer after the break.
