It’s official: Zombieland will get a sequel and it will be in 3D. Director Ruben Fleischer is signed on to return, the writing team behind the original (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) is already at work and talks are in progress for stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg to return. (Variety)

The voice cast for the upcoming animated prequel Night of the Living Dead: Origins is coming together. The latest report on the matter names six actors –  Jesse Corti, Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, Joe Pilato, Alona Tal and Cornell Womack — but not the previously mentioned Mos Def. Hopefully that’s just an oversight. (The Hollywood Reporter)

The Onion News Network reported on the GOP’s latest effort to find a new face — Zombie Reagan. (Note: If you are unfamiliar with The Onion, it is satire.) The video is embedded for you after the break. (The Onion)

There’s not a ton of new info in it, but if you’re breathlessly following every development in the upcoming Undead Labs MMOZ game, here’s another generality filled interview with lead Jeff Strain. (The Feed)

If you’ve been following the community-developed game The Zombie Game Experiment, then you’ll be glad to hear AI middleware developers Xaitment have donated their AI tools. (Zombie Command)

If you’ve always wanted a cutesy, 6″ tall zombie figurine/toy and have $40 to spend, your day has finally come. Pocket Zombies are here. (Dread Central)

If you love comics, pro wrestling and zombies, man are you going to love this. (Zombie Command)

The apocalypse-loving folk of Quiet Earth are digging the short film Plague and have made it available to watch online. You can watch it after the break here, where I have embedded it, if you hate clicking on other sites. (Quiet Earth)

Did you love REC? Do you get excited by news about movie posters and debunked rumors? Then these Italian REC 2 one-sheets and info about the now-debunked REC 3 website should thrill you to no end. (Dread Central)

It’s a very LEGO zombie apocalypse. (io9)

If you were waiting for a version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies with even more zombie mayhem, then you’ll be glad to hear that’s exactly what the new deluxe edition of the book delivers — along with a new preface from the author describing the writing process and thirteen full color illustrations. (Dread Central)

Another mainstream outlet opines on the popularity of zombies. (Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune)

And there’s a Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge mode gameplay clip embedded after the break. (GameTrailers.com)

Here’s a lengthy feature on REC/REC 2 makers Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. (Fangoria)

More Zombieland clips! Damn. By the time this thing hits, will there be any part of it that hasn’t been seen yet? (Bloody Disgusting)

Valve is appealing the Australian ban on Left 4 Dead 2. Hope springs eternal, our poor, put-upon friends Down Under! (Kotaku)

A free, web-based Flash version of Plants vs. Zombies is ready. The original was great (review here) and if you haven’t played it yet, I suggest giving the web version a spin. (Zombie Command)

A synopsis for Outpost II: Black Sun has come to light. It’s your basic NATO forces vs. battalion of Nazi zombie Stormtroopers deal. Sounds exciting, but so did the first one and it was seriously sleep inducing (review of original here). (Quiet Earth)

I’m hopeful that Dead Rising 2 will be a great game and screenshots like this one, of a guy wearing a helmet with antlers and kicking zombie butt with it, are encouraging. (Kotaku)

That Resident Evil 5 director’s cut mentioned yesterday is going to support some fancy-ass new PS3 motion controller. (Kotaku)

The HD-DVD version of Deadlands 2: Trapped has been delayed until November 27. (Shoot for the Head)

Toy collectors can get all hot and bothered about a new Mez-Itz  collectible, black-and-white zombie figure. (Bloody Disgusting)

Whack-a-Zombie unboxed

Posted by Cory Casciato On August - 5 - 2009

From our friends at It’s Unboxed (they do unboxing videos of damn near anything) comes today’s slice of undead whimsy. What we have here is a short video documenting the unboxing of the novelty item Whack-a-Zombie, one of those inflatable punching bags with a sand-filled bottom some of us probably remember from our childhoods (if you were born between 1970 and 1985, I am sure you’ve seen these). This one, as you might guess, has a zombie on it. And, like real zombies, it can theoretically take a few shots and come back for more. See how it performs in the video above.

I’m always up for new ideas in the zombie mythos, so this upcoming novel Dead Sexy, about a mortician who gets embroiled in a seamy underworld of for-profit raising the dead, has me intrigued. (io9)

According to this blog and a little Google translation, REC 2 is officially done. (Blog de Jaume Balagueró)

Got Blu-ray? Like Night of the Creeps? Well you’ll be happy to hear that the flick is making it to that format, too. Blu-ray.com has the specs and details. (Blu-ray.com)

Punk rock and zombies have been a great match since 1985’s Return of the Living Dead, and that match is commemorated in the upcoming Punk entry in Sideshow Collectibles The Dead line. (Dread Central)

If you love killing zombies and ’80s music, you are going to be tickled pink to hear that Depeche Mode is making a cameo appearance in Left 4 Dead 2. They’ll be on a T-shirt and possibly more. (Kotaku)

If you get your kicks killing Nazi zombies in Call of Duty: World at War, rejoice in the news that a fourth zombiecentric level, called “Der Riese,” is inbound. (Dread Central)

Finally, this is the last news post you will see for a while. My beloved has convinced me to take a vacation and there won’t be any computers or Internets to update where we’re going. I’m going to try to have scheduled content updates for every day I am gone, but news doesn’t work that way, obviously. So don’t sweat it when you see there’s no news — the regularly scheduled daily wrap-up will return when I return in one week.

If you loved zombies-in-space epic Dead Space but found yourself wishing, “Gosh, I wish I could just watch this instead of playing it,” you are in luck. The film version is coming. (MTV Movies blog)

And if that news has you excited, you can dig deeper with this Variety piece on the upcoming Dead Space movie, which names DJ Caruso as the director and also has a few more minor details for the hardcore fan. (Variety)

The movie adaptation of awesome novel World War Z marches ever deeper into the waters of development hell as it is announced that Paramount Pictures is seeking a new director (remember, just a while ago, they announced a new screenwriter). Is anyone surprised? This movie is going to be a beast to make and my guess is it will eat several more directors, screenwriters, cadres of producers and maybe a studio or two before  we ever see it. (Bloody Disgusting)

Get some more info on World War Z from the man himself, author Max Brooks. It’s a video and it’s embedded after the jump. (via Fangoria)

If you prefer having movies described to you to actually waiting to see them, enjoy this blow-by-blow account of a couple of scenes from Zombieland. (io9)

Or maybe you’d like some interviews with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer or star Jesse Eisenberg? Click here, or just watch the embedded interviews after the break. (Horror Squad)

Now that British microbudget zombie film Colin has been picked up for theatrical distribution, the BBC speaks with director Marc Price. (BBC)

The iconic “sweater zombie” from Dawn of the Dead is dead. RIP Clayton Hill, we’ll see you again when there’s no more room in hell. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Enjoy an impressive act of San Diego Comic Con cosplay nerdery, as some dude gets all gussied up as a Left 4 Dead Tank — his companions, dressed as Zoe and Bill, had it way easier. (Kotaku)

Three images from French zombie/gangster/cop epic The Horde appeared — Bloody Disgusting has them for you. (Bloody Disgusting)

Cutesy monster toys from Mezco, including a zombie, emerge from Comic Con. (Bloody Disgusting)

Vampires and zombies and mutants, oh my! Marvel Comics has an X-Men/X-Force/New Mutants storyline with some zombies coming up soon. (io9)

If you’re eagerly awaiting Deadlands 2: Trapped, you’ll be thrilled with the details of the upcoming release. (Horror-Movies.ca)

For comparing their game Zombie School to real school shooting, iPhone developer Retarded Arts (classy name, guys) had their app pulled from the store. Brilliant. (Zombie Command)

Enjoy this report of a recent zombie gathering in Seattle. A showing of Shaun of the Dead, a performance by comic-book rockers Kirby Krackle, a “Thriller” tribute dance with 2,000 zombies and a total of 4,000 zombies trying for a world-record zombie walk. Damn, Seattle knows how to (undead) party! (Undead Anonymous)

A couple of new stills from Zombie Women of Satan, a movie about a rock singer squaring off against a burlesque troupe populated by zombie women of Satan (okay…) and a few from The Horde, a cops vs. gangsters vs. zombies epic from Xavier Gens, the director of Frontier(s). Both are screening at the Film 4 FrightFest in England. (Dread Central)

Hi-def undead fans should rejoice at Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue coming to Blu-ray. Its list price will be about $30 and it’s going to come with a featurette with director Jorge Grau, interview with star Ray Lovelock and lots of other good stuff. This one is a favorite (review here), but I wish they were releasing it under the alternate (and far superior, in my opinion) title Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. (DVD Active)

Highly anticipated Spanish zombie sequel REC 2 will premiere at Sitges, a Spanish genre festival. Makes sense. (Horror Squad)

More zombie toys! This time is is King Zombie from DeadWorld, from Shocker Toys. (Dread Central)

After seeing the trailer for Jennifer’s Body, I can say pretty authoritatively it is not a zombie movie. So no embed, but hey, here’s a link so you can judge for yourself. (Shock Till You Drop)

The creators of Left 4 Dead have responded to the fan boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 — basically, they say “Don’t sweat, fans. We still love you and the original game. We won’t leave you hanging.” How will the boycotters respond? (Kotaku)

The ’80s space-monster zombie classic Night of the Creeps is not available on DVD yet (soon, though) but you don’t have to wait. You can watch it now on FEARNet. (FEARNet)

A new image from REC 2 was released and to go along with it, Bloody Disgusting pulled a weird image off the trailer. Rumors abound that the sequel has jumped the proverbial shark — maybe the image is a shark? (Bloody Disgusting)

More zombie toys from Fearwerx. This time, we get a zombie in scrubs (but it is not Zach Braff, unfortunately). (Dread Central)

In Portland, Oregon on June 11? Love Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? You can meet the author, you lucky dog. (Geek in the City)

It’s nearly a month old, the sound and music are sketchy and it looks pretty rough, but maybe, just maybe the teaser trailer for the new George A. Romero zombie film embedded after the break is real. The comments indicate it’s some kind of internal work-in-progress reel, and I think I recognize one of the actors from another Romero film (he’s known to like to re-use actors) so maybe this is real… It’s worth a look anyway, and you can do that after the break. (Thanks CG user demoniotto for the tip)

If you like your zombie movies extra-stupid and possibly offensive, you’re going to be thrilled to hear that Retardead comes out on DVD today. I’m pretty sure that title tells you all you need to know about this one. (Dread Central)

Yesterday, I posted my wish list for Left 4 Dead 2, then I saw this early preview of the game. Shit, looks like I am getting most of my wishes (incendiary ammo? sweet!) … but not all (although the new Charger boss looks plausible given the existing menagerie, and I can accept a Witch that walks around). And there’s some stuff I didn’t dream up that we’ll be getting, too, like dynamic weather. (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)

Fangoria has some screens and details from Dead Rising 2 and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. (Fangoria)

Zombie toy collectors will be thrilled with this upcoming limited-edition zombie figurine from FearWerx. They’ll be available first at the MonsterMania Convention in Hartford, Connecticut. (Dread Central)

Finally, the second annual Zombie Movie Marathon Month kicked off in fine fashion with Dead Set last night (review here). Starting tomorrow, I will be posting ZMMM Dailies, with the Zombie Movie Marathon Month tag, for easy tracking. Don’t forget that possibly authentic Romero trailer after the break.

A daily roundup of all the undead news that shambles into view… Got news tips? E-mail me at cory.casciato[AT]gmail.com.

The mainstream media is catching on to the awesomeness of zombies (surely a sign of impending zombie apocalypse) as the Chicago Tribune jumps in with a piece about the zombie zeitgeist and a short interview with Max Brooks, author of The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. (Chicago Tribune)

If you need more toys to announce to your friends, coworkers and loved ones how freaking much you love the undead, then you are in luck: Fearwerx has some special, limited-edition 8″ figures of the original zombie from Night of the Living Dead available. (Dread Central)

In the “It’s about frigging time” department, REC is getting a proper U.S. DVD release on July 14. That’s the good news. The bad news? No Blu-Ray release and only one lousy making-of featurette for special features. Lame. (Fangoria)

Late Friday, a rumor broke that Peter Jackson was returning to horror with a yarn about nazi zombies that travel back in time to kill Christ. Before your head explodes with awesomeness, be aware the rumor was debunked quickly. (Entertainment Weekly)

The cutesy, cel-shaded zombie game Zombie Wranglers is being released this Wednesday, May 6 on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 XBL points ($10 in Earth moneys). (Team Xbox)

In other cutesy zombie game news, the downloadable Plants vs. Zombies strategy title releases tomorrow, May 5. And some woman went and knit up a bunch of Left 4 Dead characters and zombies. (Kotaku)

Also, if you’re reading this via RSS, is there any chance I could convince you to either leave me a comment or send me an e-mail and say “hey”? I’m trying to figure out how many of you are out there and I’ve yet to discover a good tool to do so. Thanks!
