If, like me, you’ve long thought that a plush zombie doll is what you need to truly complete your life, then you’ll be thrilled at the chance to win one in this contest sponsored by an upcoming game called Zombie Fortress.

Over at Kotaku, they try to define zombies in the course of asking “where did all the real zombies go?” and manage to restrict “real zombie” to an incredibly narrow and short-sighted yet still totally inconsistent subset. Lame. (Kotaku)

J.P. Moore’s Toothless, a zombie apocalypse tale set in the 12th century, has found a publisher. Look for it to come out from Dragon Moon Press early next year. (A World on Fire)

As part of a show on vampire forensics, National Geographic dug up a document from 1679 called DE MASTICATIONE MORTUORUM or “The Chewing Dead.” Dead people that get up and chew on the living? That’s a zombie, my friend! (National Geographic)

Zombie apocalypse dream team

Posted by Cory Casciato On February - 17 - 2010

I’ve decided to ask a few of my favorite horror bloggers and friends from the online community to share some of their zombie expertise with the site. The first guy I thought of was Jay Clarke, of the excellent blog The Horror Section. Over there, Jay blogs about everything from VHS box covers to the latest releases to horror games. He’s an excellent writer with an encyclopedic knowledge of horror. And he loves zombies, maybe almost as much as I do. He’s contributed a dream-team list of half a dozen zombie-killing badasses he’d want to team up with in case of apocalypse, and it is a fine list. Not all the heroes in the group above made it, obviously — you’ll have to click through to read who did, and why. Without further ado, here’s Jay.

Details on Dead Rising 2‘s crafting system emerge: you can’t just combine any two things, but there will be lots and lots of combinations for mad-science types to experiment with. (Kotaku)

In other Dead Rising 2 news, there’s a bit more info available on the prequel/prelude Dead Rising: Case Zero. Namely, it won’t be free (drat!) but will be “accessibly priced” and give us a good sense of DR2‘s gameplay. Oh, and it will be out “significantly” before Dead Rising 2‘s August 31 release date. (Zombie Command)

Is anyone surprised that almost half the entries in this “best chainsaw moments in horror” list are zombie related? No, because zombies and chainsaws go together like gin and tonic. (Bloody Disgusting)

If launching zombies out of a cannon to break shit sounds like a good time, grab your iPhone and get ready to download Zombie Cannon Carnage. Well, not quite yet, it isn’t out yet. There is a trailer, which you can find embedded below. (Zombie Command)

If Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick get their way, the movie could yet become a TV series (that’s what it started out as, by the way). I would be okay with this. There’s a video interview with the duo after the break. (MTV Movies Blog)

Casting rumors for AMC’s TV adaptation of Walking Dead alert! Three names emerge, including the dude who plays Jacob on Lost. I vote for him. (Big Shiny Robot)

There’s a new Dead Rising 2 gameplay clip making the rounds. It looks a lot like the original game, which is comforting. You can watch it after the break. (Kotaku)

The faux film poster for the new Left 4 Dead 2 DLC “The Passing” is out. And you can get some more details on how the whole scenario fits into the Left 4 Dead 2 story. (Kotaku)

The first DLC for Left 4 Dead 2 is coming in late March. As was previously reported, it is called “The Passing” and it concerns a meetup between the four survivors from the first game and the four survivors from the second. In the DLC we’ll get a new type of common-uncommon called the fallen survivor, a zombie that used to think they were immune, but weren’t. They will apparently occasionally drop supplies. Also coming are a comic book that should reveal more of the story and an add-on for the original game that will fill in the gaps of how they ended up in the sequel’s DLC. There’s also a bunch of screenshots if you like looking at things. (Kotaku)

Remember that 3D, animated Night of the Living Dead prequel called NotLD: Origins? Yeah, still happening and an image of Ben has been released. (Dread Central)

There will be a special, Xbox 360-only prologue to Dead Rising 2 called Dead Rising: Case Zero. Word is it takes place in the time between the original game and the new one. It should be out right before DR2 is released August 31 (in North America anyway). (Kotaku)

Contrary to reports yesterday, PC gamers will get a chance to kill zombies in space with Dead Space 2. Maybe. (Kotaku)

News on DoubleBear’s still untitled zombie RPG is scant, but if you’ve got the time, there’s a wealth of information to be gleaned from this forum. (Iron Tower)

Because putting any two unrelated good things together must be even better, no matter how ridiculous the combination, there will be a game called Rock of the Dead. You know, like Rock Band. With zombies. (IGN)

If, for some crazy reason, a Resident Evil special edition of Monopoly sounds like a good idea to you, who am I to argue? (Kotaku)

The writers of Zombieland 2 are chock full of ideas: adding new characters, following Abigail Breslin’s character as she grows up and maybe giving Tallahassee a girlfriend are just a few of the possible items on the menu for the sequel. Oh, and it’s all going to be 3D. (MTV Movies Blog)

Shooting of the pilot episode of the TV adaptation of the Walking Dead starts May 15 in Atlanta, Georgia. Does this mean it’s been cast already? I want details, damn it! (Bloody Disgusting)

There’s a big ReAnimator reunion convention happening May 21-23 in Los Angeles. So far, Stuart Gordon, Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Robert Sampson and Dennis Paoli are set to appear. (Dread Central)

Speaking of ReAnimator, there’s a new movie coming soon called Exquisite Corpse about a doctor who comes up with a serum to revive the dead. Naturally, he uses it on his just-killed girlfriend. Just as naturally, it has some issues, like the fact that it only lasts a day and each time it’s used a little of the subject’s humanity is lost. Trailer after the break. (Dread Central)

Buy the corpse-stealing comedy I Sell the Dead (review here) on DVD, get a free forty-page comic as a bonus. (Bloody Disgusting)

Players of the iPhone’s FPS Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies will get a new map pack tomorrow called “Verruckt.” It’s set in an insane asylum and costs $5. (Kotaku)

A blogger ponders the all-important question: can the freezing cold and snow stop (or at least slow) the zombie apocalypse? (A World on Fire)

It looks as if PC gamers looking to shoot zombies in space with Dead Space 2 will be out of luck. No PC version for you! (Blues News)

Some wacky movie pirates in the Dominican Republic got creative with the faux movie poster for the Left 4 Dead campaign “Dead Air.” Wonder if the movie inside was the Corbin Bernsen-directed zombie flick of the same name? (Kotaku)

At long last, a game that combines time travel, zombies and dinosaurs has arrived. It’s called Age of Zombies and it will be a downloadable game for the PS3/PSP that looks like the Super Nintendo games of our youth. Well, my youth. (Kotaku)

The latest patch for Left 4 Dead 2 has arrived: bye-bye to auto-spawning during a finale, hello to bots and now melee weapons don’t have quite the same oomph against a Tank. Plus lots of other tweaks. PC players have it now, Xbox 360 players will get it shortly. (Steam News)

The Irish national broadcaster is running some sort of contest for web series and, wouldn’t you know it, a zombie series called Zombie Bashers, about a zombie disposal service, is one of the entrants. (Dread Central)

One film critic argues that irony is the most common element of zombie films. (True/Slant)

At last, Plants vs. Zombies iPhone gets a solid release date: February 15. (Kotaku)
